Connecticut Home Is Transformed — With an Edge
People often think that transforming furniture is reserved for micro apartment-dwellers in Manhattan. But interior designers Cynthia Viole Ash and Calla McNamara knew otherwise when they worked with Resource Furniture to help transform a client’s newly renovated single-family home in Greenwich, Connecticut.
The homeowner, a single mother with a teenage daughter, was loathe to have yet another run-of-the-mill “mom in Connecticut” home. No, she had an affinity for edge, and wanted to blend contemporary elements with the shingle-style house’s classic architecture. But with the construction nearly finished and many of the furnishings and finishes already selected, the home still lacked a sense of visual cohesion — and it was still wanting for that modern appeal the homeowner so desired. Some of the pieces were there, but it would take a little creative thinking and some design expertise to fill in the gaps, and incorporate new and contemporary features into the existing architectural framework.
Taking cues from the home’s dark exterior paint, black window frames, and black custom metal fireplace, Viole Ash integrated modern, European pieces from Resource to buttress the requisite contemporary atmosphere — and, of course, add greater functionality to the home.
A Living Room with Modern Elegance
In the living room, McNamara reworked the existing modular Flex Sofa into a more interesting seating arrangement, reorganizing the sofa bases out from their L-shape configuration and orienting them instead on either side of the custom fireplace. This arrangement not only lends the space a more open and airy feel, it better accommodates both socializing and watching television. And because the Flex features removable backrest cushions, the sofa bases can be adjusted for various seating depths, converted into a chaise lounge, or used for additional guest sleeping space. Complementary Flex Side Tables with modern powder-coated metal finish pair excellently with the room’s more industrial features, like the metal fireplace and custom display shelving, to add the perfect finishing touch.
A Salon with A View
In the sitting room — the homeowner’s personal sanctuary — are two Aida C chaise lounges and another Flex Table to create a cozy reading nook with a view. Upholstered in beautiful, soft Italian leather, the Aida C features movable armrests for maximum comfort. Recline the armrest for lounging around on a Sunday afternoon, or position the armrest upright for extra support. A Woven Concepts rug and Wireflow Lighting by Vibia make a statement in this tiny but functional salon.
Not Your Mother’s Dining Room
In the dining room, dark blue leather Boheme Dining chairs are gathered around the Mesh glass dining table with triangle-form wood legs. The Boheme offers 180 degrees of rotation and a return mechanism, so it’s easier than ever for guests to make their seat at the table during large dinner parties. Wireflow Lighting by Vibia is used here again, this time configured into a geometric pendant. On the accent wall, ConcreteWall photo-realistic textured wallpaper brings character to this formal dining space.

A Family Room Sofa with Hidden Surprises In Store
A Square Line sofa dominates one side of the home’s long, narrow family room. The Square Line’s linear design seems almost to refute its exceptional comfort, but don’t be fooled — these sofa cushions wrap around the backrests without obstructing the Square Line’s shape, allowing it to be at once both well-structured and remarkably plush. To save space, the Square Line is ingeniously designed with integrated coffee tables that slide out from under the seat cushions when needed.
Hidden Storage in the Master Suite
In the master suite is the Indy storage bed. An alluring blue, velvety fabric wraps the Indy’s winged headboard and bed base — a comforting sartorial element against the backdrop of the massive expanse of custom built-ins. The patented slated base lifts to reveal a convenient storage bin right underneath the bed, adding even more storage capacity to the room. (Because who couldn’t use more space?)
