In the background, a contemporary dining area with stylish lighting and clean lines is visible, highlighting the multifunctionality of the space.

Mary Maydan, founder and principal of Maydan Architects, led the architectural and interior redesign of a stunning San Francisco home renovation, reimagining the entire space with only the flooring remaining. Prioritizing multifunctionality, Maydan crafted an open plan that elegantly blends the kitchen, living, and dining areas. The breathtaking views of the San Francisco Bay and Golden Gate Bridge are visible from every corner of the communal spaces, enhancing the luxurious experience of the home.

We spoke with Mary Maydan about the project and how Resource Furniture’s Murphy beds seamlessly integrated into the home's ultramodern design.

Can you describe the client brief?

MM: Our clients purchased a full-floor apartment in Pacific Heights as a vacation home. They sought spacious, inviting areas for family gatherings but needed the apartment to include four large en suite bedrooms. Fitting all of this into a 2,700-square-foot apartment required creative, multifunctional solutions. Small space furniture was key to ensuring ample common areas without sacrificing comfort.

Our approach was to create a flexible layout, with certain spaces—like the library—serving dual purposes. Resource Furniture’s wall beds allowed us to optimize every square inch without compromising the aesthetics or functionality of the home.

How did transforming furniture come into play?

MM: The Murphy bed with desk in the library was a focal point. We wanted to create a space that could easily transition from a cozy reading room to a private guest bedroom. The Penelope Murphy bed provided the perfect solution—it is sleek and completely concealed when not in use, maintaining the clean, contemporary aesthetic of the space.

The onset of the pandemic further emphasized the need for flexible living spaces. As the family’s college-age daughter spent more time at home, the library evolved into a home office with a standing desk, all without disrupting the overall design. Resource Furniture’s ability to transform spaces was essential to this project’s success.

What brought you to Resource Furniture?

MM: We have partnered with Resource Furniture before, so it was a natural choice. The versatility, quality, and innovation of their products, such as Murphy beds with couches and furniture for small spaces, make them invaluable in projects like this. The designs are not only functional but beautifully crafted—perfect for a modern home that values both style and practicality.
