If your space is extremely narrow (say, a hallway or multi-use room), a console-to-dining table might be ideal. 

Consoles such as our Goliath table sit against the wall at only ~17 inches deep when closed, but telescope out to a full dining table (able to seat 10–12 guests) for those special occasions. The key is to check the dimensions both closed and extended: choose a transforming table that will fit comfortably in your room in its smaller form, but also provide the dining surface area you need when fully opened. It depends on the model – we offer both types of designs. Many of our coffee-to-dining tables feature self-storing or built-in extension leaves. In these designs, the tabletop panels hide within the table itself: for instance, the Ceres coffee table’s surface slides apart to reveal two hidden leaves inside, which you then simply unfold or insert into place when expanding the table. This means you don’t need to find a separate spot in your closet for leaves – they’re always part of the table, ready when you need a larger surface. 

On the other hand, some of our larger console-to-dining tables use separate extension leaves. A table like the Goliath console comes with individual leaf panels that you add to reach the full dining length (it’s available with three or five leaves, depending on how much extension you want). Those leaf pieces are usually removed and set aside when the table is collapsed back to console size. Even in those cases, the leaves are designed to be easy to handle and not too bulky – you can store them under a sofa, in a closet, or lean them flat behind a cabinet when not in use. 

So, whether built-in or separate, the extension leaves are convenient to manage. If you prefer the simplicity of never misplacing a leaf, opt for a model with self-storing leaves; if you need maximum expandability, a console table with separate leaves might be the better choice.

Absolutely. Our transforming tables are engineered with sturdy construction and safety in mind, so they are as safe as traditional tables – with some added benefits. When a table is adjusted into a given position (whether lowered as a coffee table or raised to dining height), it has secure locking mechanisms or supports to keep it stable and steady during use.

In fact, many designs have a heavy, well-built base and a low center of gravity, which adds to their stability and makes them hard to tip over accidentally. The motion components (hydraulic lifts, hinges, etc.) are designed for smooth, controlled movement, meaning the table won’t suddenly snap or drop even if a child tries to convert it improperly. Of course, we always recommend supervising young children with any furniture, but there are no special hazards unique to transforming tables. The edges and surfaces are finished to the same high standards as our regular tables (no sharp unfinished edges), and when locked in place the tables function just like standard furniture.
