Brooklyn at the Beach

There is a certain rhythm to summer in Martha’s Vineyard. Doors stay open. Sandy feet move in and out. Extra guests arrive with little notice and somehow always stay a little longer than planned.

Renovated in multiple phases from 2021 through 2025 by Morgan Studio for a large, busy family, this 4,600 square foot home was designed to embrace that rhythm. The project was also featured by Architectural Digest in its roundup of small-bedroom ideas, which highlighted Morgan Studio’s Murphy bed solution for turning a home office into a guest room. Rooted in Scandinavian modern design, the interiors balance clean lines and natural light with unexpected print and vibrant color. The team affectionately calls it “Brooklyn at the Beach.” It is calm but expressive, refined but full of life.

Beyond the aesthetic, the home is built for flexibility.

One small room carries an outsized responsibility. Most of the year, it functions as a home office, a quiet place to focus and work remotely. During the height of summer, it needs to transform into a welcoming guest bedroom for visiting family and friends. The clients were clear that they did not want the space to feel secondary in either role. It had to feel intentional every day of the year.

Lauren Morgan, Design Principal of Morgan Studio, began by rethinking the layout. Instead of lining the walls with furniture, the desk was oriented perpendicularly to the Penelope Dining Murphy bed to create a comfortable and purposeful workspace. Built-in shelving was integrated surrounding the bed, adding architectural depth and ensuring the room felt cohesive. The room was color-drenched in the same Pistacchio paint color to match the bed and shelving for a cocoon-like effect.

When closed, the wall bed reads as custom millwork, its soft green finish adding personality while complementing the Scandinavian foundation of the home. There is no visual clutter, no hint of compromise. When opened, it reveals a fully comfortable bed in seconds, turning the office into a true guest retreat. The shift feels effortless, which is exactly the point.

The same thinking carries into the guest house, where the Nuovoliola sofa and Genie table provide additional adaptability. The sofa converts smoothly into a bed, allowing the space to expand when needed without sacrificing comfort or style. The Genie table supports dining, working, or gathering, adjusting easily to the flow of summer life.

What makes this home so compelling is not only how it looks, but how honestly it reflects the way the family lives. By getting clear about how each space would be used, Morgan Studio created rooms that support both quiet mornings and full-house weekends. The result is a Martha’s Vineyard retreat that expands and contracts with the seasons, offering beauty, flexibility, and a sense of ease that feels just right for summer.
