Maximizing Space and Style with Designer Becky Spector

A native Texan who has called New York home since 1998, Becky founded her full-service interior design firm, Becky Spector Interiors, in 2012. With over a decade of experience, she has built a reputation for creating spaces that are not only aesthetically striking but also deeply functional. In a recent conversation with Resource Furniture, Becky shared her insights on design philosophy, the importance of multifunctionality, and why Resource Furniture continues to be a cornerstone of her work.

A Philosophy of Practical Elegance

Understanding how a space is used is central to Becky’s process. “One of the first questions I ask is ‘Who uses this room and how is it used?’” she says. This attention to the homeowner's needs allows her to design solutions that are not only visually cohesive but also tailored to the practical realities of daily life.
The Role of Multifunctional Design
Becky Spector used the Kali Duo Board to transform this small foyer into a functional home office area.
Becky’s long-standing relationship with Resource Furniture reflects her commitment to multifunctionality. Her initial introduction to the brand came during the design of a Los Angeles pool house, which needed to serve as both a lounge and a guest house. “I found Resource Furniture through a web search for Murphy beds,” Becky recalls. “Resource Furniture offered the cleanest design and had a comfy sofa on the front, which is just what I needed.”
That project was the start of a partnership with Resource that has continued for nearly a decade in homes on both coasts. Recently, Becky was tasked with transforming a small foyer in a Greenwich Village apartment into a functional sleeping space for two children. The solution? The Kali Duo Board, a horizontally folding Murphy bunk bed with a desk on the front. “It’s genius,” Becky notes. “It would have been challenging to accommodate their needs so well without that Resource product.”
Adapting to Client Needs
Urban living presents unique design challenges, especially when square footage is at a premium. Becky recalls a Manhattan project where “half an inch mattered.” For that client, the Goliath transforming dining table—a compact console that extends to seat six—paired with Pocket folding chairs was the ideal solution. In larger homes, the challenges are different, but the focus remains on creating spaces that are both flexible and cohesive.
Becky has also observed shifting trends in how people view their living spaces. Urban rentals are increasing, driven in part by office-to-residential conversions, and the rise of remote work is creating new demands for adaptable, multi-use spaces. “More people are seeing their home as a workplace,” she explains. “These shifts create a need for smarter, more efficient living solutions.”
The Future of Smart Living
Looking ahead, Becky sees the demand for multifunctional design only increasing. “Rooms in newer urban buildings are smaller than their predecessors, which creates the need for more thoughtful and efficient design solutions,” she says. Products like hydraulic storage beds, storage ottomans, and transforming tables are becoming essential as homeowners seek ways to maximize both form and function.
Becky’s advice to those looking to embrace multifunctional design? “Take a spin through a Resource Furniture showroom or browse their website. They have smart products that you don’t know exist, and they might inspire you in unexpected ways.”

1. Choose Multi-Functional Furniture
Becky recommends pieces that serve multiple purposes. In a Manhattan apartment, she used the Goliath table—a console that extends into a dining table—paired with Pocket folding chairs that store easily. The Tango Sofa, a Murphy bed with a sofa (seen above), is another favorite for maximizing space.
2. Use Vertical Space
Wall beds, fold-down desks, and tall shelving units free up floor space while adding storage and functionality.
3. Maximize Storage
Furniture with built-in storage, like ottomans with hidden compartments and beds with lift mechanisms, keeps spaces tidy without sacrificing style.
4. Create Adaptable Workspaces
Fold-down desks, modular seating, and extendable tables allow spaces to shift easily between work and relaxation.
5. Keep It Comfortable
Functional spaces should still feel inviting. Becky advises choosing soothing materials and thoughtful layouts to maintain comfort and flow.
