How a Motorized Wall Bed Turned a Beach House Den Into a Flex Guest Room

k+co’s Solution for Flex Space in a Modern Coastal Home

On Long Beach Island, a longtime family property was reimagined as a new coastal retreat designed for modern life: warm, composed, and ready to welcome a crowd. The 2,900-square-foot home replaced an older cottage on a tight beachfront site and took shape over roughly 18 months, with k+co Living involved from the beginning alongside the builder. The result is a house that feels contemporary in its architecture, but soft and inviting within.  Interior designer Karen B. Wolf, creative principal of k+co Living, led the project with Noha El Agizy, senior design director, shaping a version of coastal living that feels “modern, but… a soft modern.”

In a house built for weekends, holidays, and a steady flow of family and friends, one room stands out: the top-floor den.  The room had to do more than look good. It needed to stay open and inviting by day, then become a true guest room when needed. A true multipurpose flex space with range.

Wolf solved it with a Resource Furniture Tonale wall bed, specified in the motorized version she has used across multiple projects. Part of the appeal, she says, is that Resource is “really the only company” offering an integrated sofa that is “actually comfortable.” Just as important, the system’s aesthetic is “clean and simple” while still offering real comfort.

With the bed closed, the space reads as a den. Behind smart glass doors, it can shift easily into a guest suite when privacy is needed. As Wolf explains, the partition “clouds up so that you have full privacy,” while still preserving what matters most in a beach house: “you want views, and you want natural light.”  Just as importantly, the wall bed is expertly integrated into the architecture around it and truly disappears during the day.

Wolf stayed within her signature warm-neutral palette, selecting a whitewashed, two-tone finish with enough subtlety to sit naturally alongside the surrounding materials. “There’s a nuance to the palette,” she notes, and that nuance is what allows the piece to feel considered rather than inserted. The built-ins were coordinated with the millwork near the fireplace, helping the wall bed feel like part of the home’s larger design language.

There is also a practical elegance to the planning. Smaller movable tables keep the room easy to use. Nothing cumbersome blocks the bed’s movement. Everything has been considered in both positions, open and closed. The whole room feels, in Wolf’s words, “truly thoughtfully coordinated.”

That is often the difference between a multifunctional room that sounds good in theory and one that gets used.

Resource Furniture also supported the project with technical plans, construction drawings, electrical guidance, and field verification before installation, support Wolf described as “super helpful.” The result is a room executed with real precision, but effortless to live with.

In a beach house like this, extra sleeping space is not simply a bonus. It is part of how the house lives. What makes this room memorable is that it never gives up its composure in the process. It remains calm, useful, and beautifully resolved, even while doing more than one job.

That is the kind of flexibility that changes how a home feels.
